Allusion Final

*Reflection posted as a comment*

Life's Cycle

I gaze at my surroundings.
I see laughs, smiles, and joyfulness.
I feel a sudden rush go through my body.
I perform a mindless reaction and
I jump up, run to the top of the mountain.
I see the land and the people before me.

Triumphant.

Happiness, courage, and glee fill my soul.
Family, friends, and folks gather around.
The ones I care most about,
The ones closest to my heart,
The ones I cherish.

Loving.

People look up to me and see me as,
A brave one, wiling to stand up for what I believe in.
A kind-hearted one, choosing what’s best for all people.
A playful, energetic one, ready to pounce at what’s ahead of me.

Heroic.

Although, there are times when…
I forget my responsibilities.
I put play before work.
I become insouciant.

Carefree.

And sometimes,
The smallest thing can tear me down.
The tiniest detail can break my heart.
The littlest action can bring me to tears.

Sensitive.

Things may seem good at first.
But with every up, comes a down.
And with every down, comes an up.

That is, the circle of life.

  1. I decided to use Simba as the character for my Allusion because I grew up loving the movie Lion King and I would always watch it. I guess overtime, I kind of learned some life lessons through that movie, which is another reason why I chose Simba. While watching the movie, I applied some of the lessons in that movie to my life. I could really picture myself as Simba even when I was a little kid. In the movie, Simba is shown as a very playful and energetic lion who really does not want to take up any responsibilities. Although, as he gets older and wiser, he starts to realize that responsibilities are a big deal to him and for others, since he becomes the king after his father, Mufasa, passes away.
I can honestly say that I really understand what an allusion is right now. In the beginning, I did not really comprehend what exactly an allusion was. But the exercises that were practiced in class, with the promethean and the discussions with the people in our group, helped a whole lot. I did not really have a hard time actually WRITING the poem only because I had the bubble map to help me out. Using the bubble map, I was able to match my personal characteristics to Simba's characteristics. One thing I noticed after writing my poem was that our poems are kind of like metaphor poems because we talk about OURselves, OUR personality, and how WE are. I remember having a small discussion about this with some of my fellow classmates. We all agreed that this assignment was both an allusion AND metaphor poem.
One thing I especially wanted to try out in my poem was sentence fluency. In the first part, I repeatedly use the structure "I (verb)". Then in the first two lines of the second part, I wrote three nouns...then talk about what they are specifically doing. The rest of the lines in the second part uses the repeated structure "The ones" in the beginning of each line. In the third part, I use the pattern "A (adjective)" in the beginning of each line. In the fourth part, I use the same pattern that I used in the first part.. "I (verb)". In the fifth part, I tried using words that were related to each other..."The smallest", "The tiniest", "The littlest".
One thing I liked about my poem was the last line. It really gives away the allusion which was what I was trying to save for the very end.
My graphic does a good job of complimenting the poem because I used the adjectives that I had in my poem as the parts of a cycle. My graphic AND poem represent the fact that you can be very "triumphant" and "heroic" one day, then the next day you can be very "sensitive" and "loving". Then it'll happen all over again.
I think after this assignment, I was able to discover more about myself and I was able to become a better writer. It was neat knowing that I knew nothing about allusions in the beginning, but now I enjoy writing allusion poems, or poems in general, only because I feel like I understand them very well now.
