PRO/CON ASSIGNMENT

OKAY YOU CAN COMMENT MY BLOG NOW :)

HOMEWORK: DUE FRI 8/13/10
Find an article about an issue that interests you. It should be controversial, a topic that will provoke argument and debate.

On YOUR OWN BLOG post the following:
a summary of the article, and
a link to the article, and
a proposition about the issue, like the one we did for the New
Hampshire cheating issue.
Comment on two other blogs, indicating whether you agree or disagree with the proposition.

This assignment is a formative assessment of your skills in pro con thinking and writing. Level of thinking is evaluation.

Summary: The United States, according to the 14th Amendment, currently grants citizenship to anyone born in the country. Senator Lindsey Graham has considered changing or revising the Amendment so that it states that children born to illegal immigrants in the U.S. do not automatically become citizens. House Minority Leader John Boehner said that birthright citizenship encourages illegal immigration and that he believes that we should continue to speak about revising this Amendment so that we can secure our borders. However, Jon Feere, legal policy analyst for the Center for Immigration Studies, is against Graham and Boehner. "The energy spent on ending birthright citizenship might be better spent reducing illegal immigration through a commitment to immigration law enforcement generally. If illegal immigration is ended, the problem of birthright citizenship for children of illegal aliens disappears," Feere said.

Proposition: The 14th Amendment should be revised in a way that would explain that children of non-citizens born in the US should not become American citizens, but should be deported back to the country where they originally reside in. The parents should go through the proper channels if they want to live here like the immigrants before have done and then the entire family can become legal citizens of the US.

  1. I agree with you that the parents should be deported, but I think that they should have the choice to leave their children in foster care or take them with them. If the parents immigrated to seek a better life they probably want there children to recieve a better life by staying in America.

  2. Hi Czarina :)
I agree with you 100%. A family should always stick together. No kid wants their parents to leave them in another country. The 14th amendment state everything that you said, or in a similar way haha :) Excellent topic to debate on. I had to really think it though, which I LOVE doing.

  3. Sorry Czarina, but I disgree with you.
I think the parents should be deported and the kids should stay.
I think that the parents want the better for their kids. And they really do deserve better than what their parents go through.
I mean the kids barely know anything so i dont think they should be deprted. As for the parents, they should of known better to be illegally brought on American soil even if it was for the good of their kids.

  4. Hi Czarina,
    Interesting issue and clear summary.
The proposition, however, should be a single sentence of opinion, rather than a paragraph of argument.
